Campion College Special with Fr John Fleming
May 30, 2008 at Unite Adelaide
Fr John argued the need for a Catholic liberal arts college in Australia and why school leavers should investigate a future at Campion College. Fr John's background in politics, bioethics and in the media (radio) underpinned his argument. He demonstrated a critical view of the philosophy of the modern world, uncovering its contradictions and how the Catholic voice is being muted. Fr John empowered us to respond to our Baptismal promises and graces we received to witness to truth and justice in a confused and an ever increasing immoral world.
This will be the last UA before World Youth Day08- so come along for Bishop O'Kelly's send off
See you then!

Fr John Fleming, President of Campion College, Sydney, presented the story of Campion College to Unite Adelaide.
Of course the pizza was scrumptious and it was so good to catch up on all the news from the past month.
We missed Deacon Matthew's blurb this month but await a double shot next time- June 27 with Bishop Greg O'Kelly.

So far there are about 4 Capuchin Celebrations in Sydney for WYD.

March 14 Focus for Lent
In March, Unite Adelaide welcomes inspirational speaker Michele Colmer!
Michele talks about the dignity of the human person, living with a disability and how persistence pays.
Thank you Michele for your generous gift to Unite Adelaide. We were left enriched, inspired, entertained and encouraged in our mission.
To continue this topic make a comment on living with disabilities in Adelaide, why you think God allows suffering &/or to educate and enlighten us in this subject.
February 15 Focus Christian Ministry in Prostitution
Christian Ministry Rahab reaches out to prostitutes caught in the lifestyle of drugs, poverty, abuse and deprivation.
Paullette shared her testimony & calling to the ministry and encouraged us to become ministers to God's people by use of our gifts & talents and passions.
She told us stories about women who she ministered to- many of which said "they were fine and didn't need help." Paullette said that within a year the same women were drug addicts, had lost their family, children and everything. She said that their ministry is the only loving presence in the lives of these women; but often it is too late to pick up the pieces because the industry is so violently destructive.
Never-the-less they continue to work every Friday night on the street, bringing the women food, chocolates & gifts whilst introducing themselves and offering a hand in times of need. They do not directly oppose the sex industry because then they would not be allowed in the brothels. Rahab members sit with the women before and after jobs and every so often help some out of the vicious cycle. Paullette said that if they spoke out against the trade then they would have no effect on the women's personal lives.
Paullette witnesses to Jesus' presence in the lives of His precious souls- just as He reached out and touched Mary Magdalen whilst discarding the views and judgements of society, He saved a soul by reaching into it with great personal love, compassion and mercy.
Thank you Paullette and the Rahab women for sharing your Good News story with us and bringing the Light of Christ into many lives so entrenched in bitter darkness.

Pilgrim Partner Support Program
Unite Adelaide partner's up with WYD pilgrims in Vietnam.

The PPSP is being officially supported by Unite Adelaide's fundraising drive for WYD08 pilgrims in Vietnam.
The 20 pilgrims group will join the Vietnamese catholic Community in Pooraka for Adelaide's Days in the Diocese and head onto Sydney for WYD08.
Unite Adelaide's fundraising cause is called "Go An Extra Mile," whereby Catherine Burke (picture below) is going to ride her bike from Adelaide to Sydney to raise money for the PPSP.

Most feel some apprehension at the thought of driving to Sydney, but uni student Catherine Burke plans to go one step (or pedal) further and do it on her bicycle. In a colossal fund-raising ride, Catherine will pedal out of Adelaide in late June 2008, making it to Sydney in time for World Youth Day. The ride will raise funds to bring a group of pilgrims from Vietnam to Adelaide for Days in the Diocese and then on to Sydney for WYD. The project will also support Indigenous pilgrims from the Tiwi Islands to come to World Youth Day.
Catherine will visit towns and parishes along the way, building support for WYD. Her journey has been split into individual miles which can be bought by parishes and individuals wishing to contribute to the cause. Behind the ride is diocesan group Unite Adelaide, which runs monthly meetings for young adults. Unite Adelaide aims to send a group of youth to visit the Vietnamese and Tiwi people in their home parishes to mark the 1 year anniversary of World Youth Day in 2009. If you would like to be involved, email us UniteAdelaide@gmail.com
Also, keep an eye out for the Unite Adelaide team visiting your parish to promote the project.

Newman's Corner
Matthew Newman was ordained a Deacon Thursday December 20 at the Cathedral at 7pm.
Newman's Corner features Deacon Matthew as he imparts great wisdom (note: be warned of his humour) along his journey towards priesthood.
Matthew is a enlightening speaker, and we are very blessed to have him as the resident presenter for Unite Adelaide.
Congratulations Matthew!
